SINGAPORE: A female red panda at the River Safari, Poonya, has died, announced Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) on Friday (Jan 15).
In a statement, WRS said that the red panda had been suffering from gut infection and was under treatment since Jan 7. However, her condition deteriorated despite keepers and vets "providing 24-hour intensive care".
Poonya died at 1am on Jan 13 at the age of 5, WRS added. She originally arrived in Singapore with a male red panda, Puska, in 2012 from Johannesburg Zoo, South Africa. Poonya had shared an enclosure with giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia.
The park hopes to bring in another female panda, said WRS. There are now two red pandas left in attraction.
The red panda is an endangered species. The World Wildlife Fund estimates that there are fewer than 10,000 of them globally and they mostly live in temperate forests.http://www.channelnewsasia.com/
